THE LEASE

We thought that home block was the only one which Grandpa leased and later bought. No, not so. He added a 6 1/4 acre block across the road which I think may have been used to stable the shire horses which were used to clear the block.

The first irrigation maps were drawn up in the 1940s. The men who were the first to lease the land had their names written in red. Clem’s name was in red for the 6 1/4 acre and the 15 1/4 acre block. Other red names are crossed out and replace by new names. Some took over  from those who  couldn’t make it. Maybe they were from the city or the droughts, plagues of rabbits and bushfires took their toll. Walked off the land and left the debts behind
